Alan arrived in
Montreal in
September 1968, an almost 18 year-old from New Jersey, and almost
immediately got involved in radical politics: the student-left,
anti-Vietnam War, Quebec, and more. This Montreal Matin photo, from an
article describing an antiwar demonstration outside the US Consulate
was the only time he made the front page. Pretty fast work for a kid
who didn't know as much as he thought he did!
By the way- in the
dramatic photo it looks as if he's being beaten by
the police. In fact, he was hanging onto the police club to keep from
falling; the police officer is not trying to hit him, merely to shake
him loose.
